Практичні настанови ґрунтуються на чинних Наукових настановах ESPEN з клінічного харчування при захворюваннях печінки (Plauth M., Bernal W., Dasarathy S., Merli M., Plank L. D., Schütz T., Bischoff S. C. ESPEN guideline on clinical nutrition in liver disease // Clin Nutr. — 2019. — 38. — Р. 485—521). Їх було скорочено та перетворено на блок‑схеми для зручнішого використання в клінічній практиці.
Настанови призначені для професіоналів (лікарів, дієтологів, нутриціологів та медичних сестер), які працюють з пацієнтами з хронічними захворюваннями печінки. Загалом представлено 103 твердження та рекомендації з короткими коментарями щодо харчового та метаболічного ведення пацієнтів з: 1) гострою печінковою недостатністю, 2) алкогольним стеатогепатитом, 3) неалкогольною жировою хворобою печінки, 4) цирозом печінки, 5) після операції/трансплантації печінки. Рекомендаціям, пов’язаним із захворюванням, передують загальні рекомендації щодо діагностики стану харчування пацієнтів із захворюваннями печінки та ускладнень, пов’язаних з лікувальним харчуванням.
